I once was a live aboard
mate on a 48-foot Wheeler flybridge sportfisherman of which Hemingway
would've approved. When the skipper hollered, I scuttled up the
slippery ladder to the bridgedeck before the boat's next lunge could
break my feet free and dangle me overboard like a cockeyed pendulum. I
slept forward, in a lower pipe berth on the same level as the salon. During
charter trips, wisps of bourbon-fed conversation and cigar smoke would
drift in as the skipper tried to sell the guests another day or three
aboard. Then he, too, would stagger in and using the side of
my bunk as a step - hoist himself into the upper berth. The guests,
of course, got the upholstered accommodations in the salon.
Standing on the dock of Oyster Harbors
Marine in Osterville, Mass., looking at the Cabo 48 Flybridge Sportfisher,
I had a strange déjà vu. This
Cabo seemed somewhat reminiscent of that Wheeler. not only
is it the same size but its running bottom also sports a clean, sharp
